Data Center Operations Engineer at Kraken
About the Team
The Infrastructure Operations team manages Kraken’s entire network and compute infrastructure—ensuring performance, reliability, and security across the company’s global data centers.
This team blends technical precision with operational discipline, maintaining one of the most secure environments in the cryptocurrency industry. The Data Center Operations Engineer plays a key role in safeguarding uptime, driving efficiency, and sustaining the physical backbone of Kraken’s trading infrastructure.
Role Overview
The Data Center Operations Engineer is a hands-on technical role responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing Kraken’s physical data center assets. You’ll perform advanced preventive and corrective maintenance, coordinate vendors and contractors, and ensure infrastructure scalability and documentation accuracy.
You’ll also contribute to capacity planning, asset tracking, and financial forecasting, supporting Kraken’s ongoing growth while maintaining the operational excellence demanded by one of the world’s top crypto exchanges.
Key Responsibilities
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on mission-critical infrastructure.
Install, configure, and maintain servers and networking systems.
Provide on-site support including hardware installation, decommissioning, and break/fix operations.
Manage contractors and vendors, ensuring compliance with security and procedural standards.
Maintain accurate asset documentation, rack layouts, and data center inventory using tools like NetBox (IPAM/DCIM).
Support financial and capacity planning, including cost projections and renewal tracking.
Lead or assist in capacity management and backfill planning.
Participate in on-call rotations and travel to support physical data centers and office sites.
Monitor and troubleshoot the physical infrastructure, ensuring high uptime and performance.
Qualifications
3+ years experience in data center operations within a high-security or enterprise environment.
Experience with power, cooling, and airflow management of physical devices.
Working knowledge of IP addressing, subnets, and gateway configuration.
Proven accountability for site or system ownership at scale.
Strong documentation discipline and commitment to maintaining a single source of truth for assets and dependencies.
Understanding of financial forecasting and operational budgeting.
Excellent collaboration and communication across distributed teams.
Ability to work under pressure with high attention to detail.
Physical capability to lift equipment over 25 kg (55 lbs).
