About the Team

The Custody team plays a key role in redefining secure digital asset management. The team brings together Rust engineers, cryptographers, hardware specialists, and blockchain experts from around the globe to develop next-generation custody solutions.

Their focus is on high-security environments, hardware integrations (such as HSMs), and efficient cryptographic signing—ensuring users have the safest, most reliable custody experience in the industry.

Role Overview

As a Backend Software Engineer – Custody, you’ll build and maintain high-performance backend services supporting Kraken’s institutional-grade custody platform. You’ll contribute to core components responsible for wallet management, blockchain integrations, transaction signing, and secure key storage—advancing the future of self and institutional custody at Kraken.

This is a fully remote role available to candidates across the U.S. and Canada.

Key Responsibilities

Integrate Kraken’s existing systems with new and emerging blockchains.
Design and implement low-latency, high-availability, and secure applications.
Work with specialized hardware integrations (HSMs) for secure key management.
Develop high-volume, scalable backend services for crypto operations.
Write efficient, reusable, and testable code across Rust, C++, or Go.
Maintain and enhance existing crypto custody services to meet security and performance standards.

Qualifications

5–10 years of backend development experience.
Proficiency in Rust, C++, or Go.
Experience with blockchain daemons such as Bitcoind, Litecoind, or similar software.
Strong foundation in cryptographic concepts and data protection.
Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and GNU/Linux environments.
Solid understanding of asynchronous programming patterns.
Experience with distributed systems and messaging platforms (e.g., Kafka).
Knowledge of authentication, authorization, and scalable system design.

Nice to Haves

Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams.
Proficiency with embedded systems or constrained environments.
Practical experience implementing custodial cryptographic techniques.
Proven success in developing secure crypto custody services.
